we need to have our eyelids closed while we sleep to proctect our eyes from drying out. so those who might not look completely closed must at least close their eyes some times. or they've had eyelid surgery which has injured their protective mechanism. in which case they'd have to use drops or ointments to protect their eyes while they sleep.

I think sometimes it depends on the size of a person's eyes. My husband and my youngest daughter have large yees and they both sleep with their eyelids cracked a bit.... it's just more work to close them all the way shut.... so when they relax, they stay open a little.

I would like to know this too... so I am going to keep an eye on this subject! I used to think it had to do with being a light sleeper. But I am thinking this probably is not the case.
