flock of birds, they can be in the hundreds and all fly in the exact same directions - it's like they are making art in the sky. How do they know to turn left with all the rest of them. It seems to me that they have to have some "smarts" to do this. It's always amazed me. How about you? Do you have any idea how they do this?

They do have extra smarts. First of all, they all know where they are going. They go the same way, ALWAYS. Second, flying animals have a heightened sense of 'sonar' that comes into play when they are in close proximity. Think of bats!

N8ball88's answer is outdated. The leader explanation has been used for centuries, but it has been questioned since there is no real leader in a bird flock (applies to fish banks as well). Birds trade places along the way, the ones in the front end in the back and those outside the formation end inside. That way no one gets more tired than the rest. Today it seems that birds generate a very special form of equilibrium, where all respond to those next to them and the ones in the outer core respond to pressure, heat, wind, etc., thus creating a composite body effect.

Generally, as far as I know, flocks of birds follow a lead bird and fly whatever direction that bird goes.
