I saw the results of a study that showed that that do start learning or at least recognising language in the womb. Newborns apparently react when they hear a language heard in the womb but didn't react to a previously unheard language. Babies can also pick up the minutest differences in a language sounds that adults and even children over a certain age can no longer do.

Theory says that children who are sung to, talked to, or played music while still in the womb do develop better cognitively. There is not a whole lot of concrete support for that theory though. In fact, there are very few ways that we can actually measure to see if there is any difference, hence the reason there is little to no support.

No, their brains haven't reached that stage of development, language comes later. Children who use sign language can use complex sentences by on average 18 months, slightly ahead of hearing children. Children can understand words and sentences before they can use them.
Talking to your child and playing music to them while you are relaxing with your feet up is a great idea because they can hear you, and after they are born will associate the music or their parents voice with a feeling of calm and security. Your partner should definitely talk to your baby - but remember, while you are relaxing.
You are providing all of your babies blood through the placenta, and the chemicals that signal 'relaxed' are passing through as well; just as when you are stressed or anxious you are sharing those chemicals.

I am not sure wheather or not babiescan learn an actual language whilst in the womn, I gues not. However my friend, who is a huge U2 fan, played U2 music through the headphones on her tummy during the final trimesta, especially when the foetus was restless. The result being that whenever Alex as she is now is upset,my friend plays U2, and she imediately calms down.
This does not seem to happen with any other music she playes to her . Strange but very true.

Babies may not learn language in the womb but you should talk to your baby all the time so it understands the cadence and tone of your voice - experts reckon that's what babies first recognise (plus your own special smell). Enjoy your pregnancy and good luck!

I'm a mother of nine children and i feel that when baby is in your womb they can learn to associate to different sounds and language hence why they learn their native language and understand so well they may not be able to speak the lingo as they have not learnt it but they most definitely recognise it. i feel its the sounds they understand NT the actual word as they cant associate a word with something cos they do not know

Learning, no. Hearing your voice, yes. I use to sing to my babe while I was pregnant and after he was born he loved to listen to music. Sometimes I would put my headphones on my belly so he could hear a song. And he calms down when he hears music. And you'll be surprised at how much your baby will reconize your voice. Mine reconized my voice right from birth. If someone else is holding him and I say something he'll jerk up his head and his eyes get all big and he just sits there and listens to me talk. It's amazing!! Congrats on the baby!!

yes, they can. i am very intrested in science and have learned about this. it depends of what your actions are. If you slowly rub your belly gently while your baby is in its womb then it will probally turn a bit happy, or it will help it go to sleep. Try gently tickling your baby, it will help it get used to humour and will mostly be a happy baby. I hope my answers helped. You can e-mail me if you have any more questions about it on louchihuahau@yahoo.co.uk
If your actually having a baby, congratulations! Could you help me answer my history question?

Babies learn many things in the womb itself. It learns to cry when born, how to suck nipples for milk etc.In Hindu mythology Abhimanue, learns armoury from hearing from womb. The language in which you can communicate to child in womb is yet to be found out.Feelings of mother(happy or sad)it can understand.A lot of scientific research is required for effective communication with child in womb.It may result pre-learning/pre programming of brain/pre -neruo linguistic learning programming etc.

I believe that the child 'can' indeed hear and recognize the voice of its mother and father when they continously talk to the child. I sang, read, and talked to my daughter daily. I don't know how much of an effect this had, but she was reading by the time she was two, could identify all the parts of her body and at 20 years old today - very smart - an avid reader and still recognizes my voice.
