This is a very clever question, Herr Muse.

My best guess, and only because I know of one, is teh illustrious rooster named Chaunticleer from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. More particularly, I think a plausible answer lies in connecting two tales in particular from Chaucer's collection: The Nun's Priest and the Friar's Tale. However, I don't believe that I am correct. I shall deem you therefore ~ The Riddler ;)

Okay - I can't find any thing to back this up and I've been trying to think of this because I feel that I have read it - oh, so long ago in college. But my poor excuse of a memory keeps bringing me back to Faust. It doesn't feel right because I've looked it up and it doesn't really match that description but my brain keeps saying otherwise.
