Religion serves as a way to answer questions no one could answer before the age of real science. It served as a way to make people more secure in thier lives and it served, and still does serve for that matter, as a way to control the populace in thier actions and beliefs.
I have lived my lif without religion, and I think human would have been better off without it. Without religion, we have to truely take responcibilities for our own thoughts and actions.
It has a big part in the human race, but, if anything, it will doom us.

Religion from the very beginning has always been primarily Ceremonial. In the earliest days of mans' history they just didn't believe in 1god, they were pan theistic(belief in many gods). It wasn"t till Moses(aka Ahkanaten-Imenhotep the IV) came along that Monotheism was given to the world. Religion would teach a person morality and to look within oneself. It taught people to think. When someone would receive Enlightenment, they would be taken to the local Temple-Mystery School and were told not to talk to anyone outside the Temple about their Enlightenment. Today organized religion has devolved to the point of Control and Money! You can take a look at any organized religion and it has devolved to Power, Money and Control. As a race we have not evolved too much. There are some that have and they usually are persecuted or killed by organized religion, because they do not want the "TRUTH" to come out! Supression and Censorship are the main tools! Today, much knowledge is coming our because of new archeological papers-papyrus are being brought to the dawning of a new Enlightenment to Earth! You will no longer be able to hide behind Dogma and Doctrine-Manmade!

Yes. In a very large degree. Social Evolution. It is very easy to limit our perception of evolution as an equation of inter-species relationships. But evolution can be an equation of INTRA-species relationships too. The human soceity evolves as much as the ecology evolves, and religion plays a very big part in it.
Religion is a social order brought about by convening psychologies and philosophies. Most of it has molded our current behaviours and way of living, and it plays a big part in forming governments, nations and general social standards and mindsets including stigmas. Faith has bring forth revolutionary discoveries, new forms of governance and has lead into contemporary way of thinking, in quite many an occasion.

Most defintely. Religion has a scientific basis. The irrationality of religion has a scientific basis. It goes back to our cave man days when man was very insecure living in a hostile environment. The cerebral cortex of our brain (the complex thinking apparatus) is a relatively recent addition.
The more primitive underlying limbic system, the seat of our ancient emotions or innate temperaments, is in all of us. Humans use both systems. In times of trouble, people still pray for intervention by the god(s). Prayers are requests by persons to have the laws of the universe repealed in their favor.
People who are rational, relying on their cerebral cortex, look at all the absurdities in religion. Christian dogma expects people to believe the fairy tale of Noah's ark, although it is patently impossible to squeeze even samples of billions of the world's animals into one small ark. Rational persons consider such stories ludicrous.
The bible account of the creation of man and the universe is in such contradiction to irrefutable facts that a rational person cannot help but laugh about such fantasies.
Have you heard the saying "there's no atheists in foxholes?" Its because in times of danger, humans revert to the primitive part of their brain for security.

Religion is the only thing which keeps you fearing. It must evolve with the idealogies and contemporary thoughts and the clash of old and new creates the troubles we see today. I believe religion is a way of life and not the life itself. All religions talk about compassion, love, peace, harmony, respect etc etc. And thats the whole essence of it - with faith tying it all together.
