I really love watching anime! It's great, but i'm afraid to be judged b/c my family are always talking about how anime is really dumb so i'm scared to watch it... any suggestions?

If you don't like anime please don't answer... I'd rather get advice insted of an "I Hate anime" or "It's really stupid why do you watch that crap."

Plus my brother looks through all my stuff(which i'm going to kill him for eventually) and if he saw amine books laying around he'd use it against me forever!!!

Look, people are harsh. The reason they judge anime harshly is because, yes, a lot of it IS crap. Sorry. However, if you make it a point to watch something worthwhile, something that speaks to you for a specific reason (not just, "thats neat, wow"), the next time anyone gives you $#!T, you can take it upon yourself to explain, exactly, why you like what you do, what its good points are, and also make the point that if someone can't understand what you've just pointed out, then it is that person, actually, who is "dumb." Art is subjective, people are going to like what they like, good or bad. But if you make an effort to analyze WHY you like something, then you have a better chance of explaining that to another person, which will at least earn you respect and, potentially, could change their mind.
I've given away countless awesome comics to people... why? Because when they rag on me (out of ignorance), instead of ME feeling bad about their comments, or insulting them, instead I share something I think is great with them. I have yet to have someone, after actually reading what I give them, come back and tell me comics suck. I've done the same with anime (films tho, mostly). Just be sure you know why you like something - thats all the "defense" you need.
And listen to these other people - your identity is just that, YOURS. You don't have to shape yourself with the ultimate goal being to please other people. Be yourself... even though sometimes it can be very hard. But don't be a wuss, either. Expect grief - it, and dying, are the only things you can truly bank on in life. Be intrepid.

What the? that is one ridiculous confession. Hey i'm a big fan of anime also so you're not alone. My first anime i think it would be Sailormoon or Akazukin Cha Cha i'm not really sure anyway we family kinda enjoy watching it. Yes i know, even my mom scolded us for watching to much anime but i have my pride so i told her that this anime is not specialise for KIDS! it contains violent,angst and adult scene. Honestly it's true. If it was so dumb just deaf yourself about it cos once you're watching your favourite anime you'll get suck into that world. In other words... it's your choice and your hobbies so why they should interfere? Well some anime is bad while some is good but you can differentiate it depend on your intentions. So don't feel embarrassed about it every people have weird hobbies.

Well I don't think it's something to be embarrassed about, you have so many people that love anime in this world (if there wasn't it would be dead)
Personally I think you should get the right kind of anime. I believe that if someone doesn't like anime they haven't seen the right kind. I think you should totally watch it. My family used to think that it was stupid and a waste of time too, but then i told them that i liked this stuff, and that it was me, and if they wanted to take that away, i would be very sad. And so they dont complain anymore. I wouldnt be embarassed, because look at how many people share the same interest as you!!! Many! Millions even. Dont be embarassed. Also judging will happen its a big part of life but, theres not much you can do about it so i would guess you have to deal with that minor part. Its only natural for people to make assumptions.

You shouldn't be embarrassed lots of people love anime my brother & sister think that anime is stupid to watch and that am to old for it but I don't care and I’m going to keep watching it even when am old because it’s just that good
People that are way older then me watch it and there not embarrassed

Be yourself! I love anime. I watch it, read it and write fanfics. My parents think its dumb too and say that I'm now a young lady and shouldn't be watching that "trash". I just told her that I like it and that I have been studing really hard all my life and I reserve to watch something I like. Besides, there are hidden morals in anime. You shouldn't be embarassed. None of my friends are into anime but its a part of me and I can't change who I am. Be yourself and hold your head high because no one can change who you are! There are many people just like you.

don't worry what other people think, i'm 38 yrs old and i think anime rocks, i let my daughter stay up really late on weekends to watch it. if you like anime then that is all that matters. a lot of the shows have really deep story lines and are basically like animated soap operas, just a million times better than soap operas.

Why feel bad/embarrass? There are a lot of people that likes (loves) animes...(including myself and my fiancee.)...don't listen to those people that say animes are dumb...they are very cool...
When I talk to those people that don't like them, I always defend myself by saying "Japanese animes are much better that American cartoons."
Don't be afraid to say you LOVE animes...be proud...
Japanese Animation are one of the coolest thing that ever existed
here on earth!!!

dont worry about it! at first all my friends thought i was a nerd...and guess what i still am and they still think im a nerd! but oh well if you like it, then you like it! its who u are...its what you like, so dont be worried. its amazing, you should be proud you like something different... cuz its gonna catch on around the world Big time pretty soon. just think of it as you being ahead of the crowd! if anime was rlly as dumb as pple say it is then why do so many pple love it! cuz its not dumb! its great...better than american cartoons. i think you are awesome if you love anime!

Who cares what your family says, you are your own person, if you always follow people's opinion and not your own, you would never get anywhere in life. Anyways your family should support your love of watching anime because they ARE your family.
