Let's say, we built technology and depend on it..
Such as how we built cars and automated machines to help transport us
from place to place, and thus we walk less, we become obese
and become out of shape. Thus we depend on cars and machines
such as those, because now we cannot walk far distances because
we are fat. Now let's say in the future we eventually develop
such extensive technology that we depend on it 24/7 to survive.
And let's say that we eventually pay less attention to skills such as
modern enginnering or electronics. So in the future we depend
on a ridiculous amount of technology, enabling us to be
useless in essence, and than we also don't apply the effort
to learn essential skills in maintenance and innovation because
we're so lethargic.
One day an accident occurs and our technology is rendered
useless and we have no means to recover from it since
we are completely incapable of functioning without technology
and have no skills at all.
Is this a likely end to mankind?

We have the ability to kill all humans with nuclear war. We could also do it slower with global warming.
Go see An Inconvenient Truth. It was very interesting.

It is quite likely that such a possibility can quite occur...
But considering Heisenbergs' Principle of Uncertainty in life, nothing can be predicted quite accurately because there is always a hidden factor at work.
But I quite have to agree to the common view that Technology will be the end of mankind, because in return to get something from nature, we have to give something back, and if we borrow something to the extent that we cannot return it, there is no hope for mankind...
The fact is that we feel that being able to think and read and write and socialise, we are more capable of surviving and escaping any dangers. Though true, there is still a downside to it, as we can think... And anything that can think and apply it, without realising its complete effects, are in danger of unknowingly endangering themselves.....
Every race has to come to an end, as we have noticed in nature.... The more complex the race, the lesser is its life span in the race for existence... As we have seen, the cockrach has been living since long past, whereas the dinosaur became extinct.. Also, I believe that the saying CURIOSITY KILLED THE CAT applies here... We are in the constant search for answers, the questions to which, we have not yet realised properly...
It is imperative that we realise our mistakes, which are non-existent in ature, and correct them... Only then can we prolong the span of our species.... But in the end, the human race has to come to an end... Because that is the Law of Nature....

I think the biggest problem with technology is that we are completely dependent on non-renewable resources for everything from silicon chips to plastics to metals to electricity to gasoline. When the oil wells run dry and the mines are empty, civilization as we know it will grind to a halt. I imagine most of us will kill each other off or else starve to death at that point, if we're still around.

Well the Amish will be laughing at us then. There are always those who choose to spur modern technology and those who love to explore the outdoors. With technology some of that exercise will diminish, but enough should survive so that not all of mankind is gone.

No. We will end by overpopulation and depletion of our biosphere. Just like a fungus eating a discarded piece of fruit. We will populate until the resources are scarce and then slowly dwindle down to nothing unless technology can save us.

What sort of accident do you forsee that would render technology useless?
I believe that may be the flaw in your theory.

It's possible, but it most likely won't happen in our lifetime. To prevent it, we will have to put limitations on technology. No one will like that.

a vague possibility, but still a possibility! nano tech can be everything, but ironically it renders simple minds to wander and not use its basic instinct.

Yes. Blame it on the mask of ego that we all were. Were there is competition there is hate. Hate leads to anger. Anger leads to death.
