Friends of mine (resturaunt owners) heard that if they hung a ziplock bag of water from the ceiling (actually put ice in it...let ice melt...and keep bag hanging from the ceiling afterward) that flies would be nonexistent in their establishment. and it worked. as a result, another friend of mine tried this on and around his deck...also worked. BUT WHY?

they work because of the flies multifaceted eyes,,, the water and the droplets,reflect light in multiple directions and colors,, the flies can not orient themselves.. to them its like the old disco bars with the spinning mirror balls on the ceiling!! it drives them out..

I've seen the same thing, but all the bags I've seen have pennies in them.

But good question, I've wondered that myself (and need to try it now that I live in the South with too many Damn BUGS!). :)

it looks like a wasp nest to the flies. flies avoid wasps.
