true or false, tones in a pencil drawing should generally be applied lightly at first, because it is easier to lighten it.

I think they should be applied lightly, at first, so that the artist can be sure those are the marks he wants, and so that he can darken (enough) so that it fits into his total work. That is, I start out light and darken to shade and add depth, but as I darken other areas, I find that (first) spot needs to be darkened (more) to give the proper image & perspective to the total work. Does that make sense?

I agree with what you are asking [start lighter], but I'm not sure what you mean by "easier". It's easier to start light than to have to try to "undo" dark later.

It's like in cooking. You can't really take away that dark tone, so you either have to start over, or be really good with an eraser. Use the flat side of your pencil, and start lightly. Also, use good quality paper, because for blending purposes, most types are icky. So yes, apply a light base, the do darker shadows and things.

False. There are no hard and fast rules in art. The general "rule" about starting with light values first is not because it is easier, it is so that the artist can make adjustments and corrections that will be easier to erase and or correct. Light graphite is also less likely to smudge as you are working the paper surface. If, however, you are creating a "low key" project (mostly dark shades), your initial lines or values may be applied heavily or with a softer pencil, because you may want to get darker quicker (it is all relative).

true, you should apply lightly, lightly until you achieve the desired tone b/c it looks like crap if u erase a lot & also b/c it is easier to darken than to lighten...all of this unless you are really good at what you do and can get it perfect the first time!

Lightly at first, not because its easier, but because you can always darken it, but you can't effectively lighten it.

True, a woman has so much to lose in a failed relationship, so they should be more careful to pick out a guy. A man can stay or leave, as he feels.
