Rain is generally preceded by a drop in the barometric pressure, right? That's why your old scars or bad knees or whatever ache when rain is coming. Your body is adjusting to the drop in pressure.

So the idea is that maybe the lower pressure affects a cow's digestive system - all those gasses and juices and stuff in all those stomachs.

So this kind of puts the cow off its feed, and it doesn't feel like grazing.

Being a cow and all, it can't think of anything else to do so it lies down.

They have a sixth sense and are able to know the future. So they lie down that way they do not lose these abilities for if a cow is standing up while doing so, they lose this power of course. Cows are werful, yo.

The reason is to hold there body heat if it a cold rain then most of the cattle will lay but, if its a warm rain some will lay an some eat just depends because they have to maintain a curtain body temp just like a human

They will only lay down if the rain is only going to last for a short time. They use this rain to cool themselves and since most of their body mass is exposed when they lay down it is much more effective. They will continue to graze if the rain will last for a long time as they must eat alot to maintain. Best wishes

Maybe it has to do with a story that my middleschool science teacher told me:

Mr. Boyette used to live in the midwest. The land is flat. He used to love it when a heavy storm came because it was guaranteed that a cow would get hit by lightining. The farmer could never use it, it was bad meat. So, he would "harvest" the meat and they would have a cookout that night.

Maybe they don't want to get hit by lightining?

barometric pressure drops causing the stomic of a cow to trick it into thinking it is full. a plus* if cows are laying down too, the fish arnt biting(same effect).

I asked that question of my uncle who owned a ranch when I was a little girl and the answer he gave me is that it is cooler for them as lower to the ground and the ground absorbs water and cools them down!
So there!

they lie down because they are not very sure footed and they don't want to slip and fall.
