From running out local merchants to paying my 72 year old grandmother (who has worked for WM over 10 years) $7.65 an hour, why do we as a socity allow this? For cheaper detergent? What have we become?

i totally agree with you.

aldarra: "Well..everyone has a choice of where to work and where to shop. Why do people work at Walmart and complain? They do have a choice." what about people in really small communities? if they are poor they do not have a choice i used to live in a town of ten thousand people and many of the poor people there could only work at wallmart because they did not have a choice of where to work because wallmart has driven all the places where they could work for higher wages out of town. wallmart also kills small family buisness in small towns once wallmart has sucked all the blood out of a town they raise prices and then close the store and people have nowhere to go. all the grocerie stores in my town where closed because of wallmart. your only choice was to go there and buy food even if you didnt like it unless you wanted to drive an hour to the next town. people did NOT have a choice of where to work OR shop.

Actually, if you do some research, Wal Mart is one of the best paying employers for such low-level retail work. Not everyone can make six figures - you have to earn it by gaining some knowledge and accepting responsibility.

If someone wants to stock shelves or run a cash register for a living, they're not going to make much money. That's just life. If everyone were making $20/hour, then the cost of everything would inflate accordingly, and a box of Corn Flakes would be $50. Not a big help to the "poor" families, is it?

If Wal-Mart is so evil, why doesn't grandma find another job? Could it be she has no other skills? Could it be that Wal-Mart IS the best paying employer for such work?

If you don't like Wal-Mart, don't shop there. It's really that simple. If enough people share your view, the stores will go away. However, I think a lot more people don't just listen to the union hype and look for the FACTS about how Wal-Mart pays and how it treats their employees. That's why they're growing while stores like K-Mart and Sears are going bye-bye.

If you want to give the business to other merchants, say the "mom and pop stores, then boycott Walmart. They can afford to lose a few bucks with each member of the Walton family worth at least $20 billion.

It's basic economics. It's called supply and demand. As long as the demand is there, the supply will be as well. When people stop demanding cheaper prices (like that's going to happen) then Wal-Mart will go out of business. Till then, Wal-Mart can wield their powerful axe over both employees and suppliers.

If your grandmother doesn't like her rate of pay, she needs to find another job. That is well above the minimum wage. If people wouldn't work for that wage, they would have to raise it.

Why is it so wrong that people want to save money? While I realize that the "local merchants" can't compete price-wise, what about those of us who need to pinch pennies and appreciate the lower prices?

We don't allow it, we encourage it, if you don't like a companys policy you always have the option of not shopping there. Most people don't care how much your grandmother makes as long as the get the Walmart pricing.

Because we got tired of the local store owners screwing people over. overpricing products. when walmart came to our community the local merchants cried it would put them out of buissness but it did not it just took away their monopoly and they had to start trying to compete

Walmart is bad at labor things yes but, I enjoy there selection and there cost. I can live well with shopping there and can't live at all with stores like publix and winn-dixie. At least they pay half way better then other companies.

That's not good, but they sell cheap stuff, and for working in this kind of store the salaries are not so high.I work in this sphere as well, and I don't get paid a lot.But for part time is enough, and I get discounts, which is good!

People want the bargains they can get with WalMart because they buy and sell more efficiently than anybody else. They deserve the business.
