Actually the issue is not a big deal.

Churches and religious organisations are not forced to marry same sex couples.

It should simply be based on couples leaving together in order to get fair legal social benefits....

The recognition should have stayed at that ...
It's actually the churches that brought the issues and named it marriage per say... and so it became an issue.

I am not bothered by same sex marriage at all on the contrary, I am not peaking and sneaking into my neighbors life on order to watch on which side of the bed they sleep.

As for children, Same sex parents or not, societies around the world are being challenged in many was and there is no past models that seem to be the answer for all....

All what I know is this, mistreatment of children in the name of religion, or alcoolic hetero parents or abused children or any other form of child neglect is a major societal issue. Instead of focusing on offset issues such as same sex marriages we should be more concern on the welfare of children and dignity of our elderlies and their be kind to our neighbors.

There are GREAT answers here, so I'm going to do something I don't usually do. I'm not actually going to answer the question, but respond to one of the answers. d r: Procreation is not a REQUIREMENT for marriage. If it were, there would be a ban on marriage between people incapable of producing children... such as elderly people and those with medical problems that prevent conception. Many of the most famous Biblical characters were polygamists, including several who were considered "righteous" in God's eyes. When marriage was "invented" it was not the "romantic" institution we know today. Marriage has changed DRAMATICALLY since the begining and your opinion that it should remain EXACTLY as YOU know it because it shouldn't change is silly. If you think Gay people don't deserve equal rights in our society, just say so, don't try to blame god, nature, and religion for your hatred and bigotry.

You should look into the insurance concerns and also research inter-racial marriages. Those, I believe, used to be illegal, and the issues were probably similar.
