It is so because the rest of us let them get away with bigotry. We will gladly confront Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Liberals, Conservatives, Americans, French, Japanese, Capitalists and Communists with whatever gripe we may have with their beliefe system but when it comes to Islam, we shy away from making them uncomfortable. After 9/11, instead of being more answerable for thier baseless belief system, the wold has moved to allowing them to be more evasive. They are the "Victims" of stereotyping - not the perpetrators of more than 90% of terrorist acts in this world. They are the 'religion of peace'! Yeah right.
A Christian has to struggle and give everyone a satisfactory explaination for his belief in immaculate conception or resurrection, A jew has to explain why he thinks God gave them Israel but a Muslim never has to explain why if God chose anyone for the job, why would he pick a womanizing mass-murderer to be His last prophet? A Muslim never has to explain why he thinks Jewish settlement in West Bank as occupation but why Muslims controlling all the land outside Mecca-Medina, including what is now Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan Pakistan, Jordan, Yemen and Syria not Islamic Occupation?
And of course then there is the standard issue excuse that only 0.1% of Muslims are bad 99.9 percent of Muslims are peace loving. So here is my question: If someone gave you a glass of milk that is 99.9% milk and 0.1% cyanide, would you drink it?

There you go !
Actually the Vatican and many Christian and Hindu based organisations have now stopped promoting Interreligious Dialogues because of the facts you brought up.
So The current Pope proposed this:
1) Reciprocity (you build a Mosque in Rome then we should be able to build a Church anywhere in S. Arabia for exemple)
2) Dialogue based on the respect of the Charter of Human Rights as define by the UN
So read the Koran on your own in the quiet space of your own living room, read it with a critical mind and see for yourself:
1) Women's treatments and "rights"
2) Jihad: Or wadging war
3) Treatment of the Infidels (that includes Christians, Jews and Polytheist (Hidus and Buddhists)
You will understand a lot more about Islam... and the blatant double languages.
Muslims can be respectful and peacful, Islam is however a violent religion and does clearly define and differenciate how to treat muslims FROM non-muslims. Any other way of piutting it is Apologetic and is not supported by any official Islamic schools in the world.

I'm not sure what your question is but the double standard is pretty much the standard in most religions and cultures. Lets face face men want sex whether they are married or not. But in many cultures including Christian and Jews there is a strong bias for the men to want to be their wife's first lover. While part of that is to protect the male line, no small part of it is pride and ego. Obviously if men are to have lovers before they are married there must be some willing women...kind of a double standard wrapped in a conundrum. I would point out for example that in traditional Christian weddings the bride wears white to signify purity (aka virginity). The only real difference is the lengths some, not all, elements of Muslim culture treat women who "transgress". As if stoning isn't barbaric enough it seems stripping the victim is also part of her punishment. Apparently it's very ok to get a free peep show before you murder someone. Yes, it would be "silly" if the consequences weren't so tragic.

hey be careful
those fanatics might just issue a fatwa against you.they killed and raped all the lands they had occupied wherever they ruled.
also they divide the world into 3 types of regions-one where islam rules(saudi)
two where islam is not yet fully in power but can be(regions like india, china, former ussr countries)
and third where islam has no hold.
different conducts are expected by muslims living in different regions----oppressive in the first, subversive and just appearing lawabiding in the second, and surviving in the third.
that the worlds got to rid of all infidels.
it is a combination of the mid eastern culture and the licence given by their religion that allows muslims to be blatantly dishonest.
even if as some people here say there is no official ban on other religions the religious police that patrols there will make sure that no idol worship or religious books stay even inside your home. i know this because it happened to my friends when their apartment was run over by the religion police and they ransacked the place.

Your absolutely right there is a double standard, as all who are non believers are not allowed to practice but then the Muslims want to take over and feel Free to practice their religion even when it is not in a country where their religion is popular. They also like to convert at gunpoint. If you try to practice your own religion in their land. Just ask the 3 Christian females in Afghanistan before the War with the USA.

It isn't a religious belief, it's a cultural one. If you look back at western (Christian) history, until a few hundred years ago, we were the same. There were wars and persecutions all over Europe for many centuries. It was illegal to be Catholic in England at one point, and people were executed for it. It was illegal to be Protestant there at another point, and guess what, people were executed then, too. It was illegal to be Jewish in most western European countries for many centuries, which is why we find most European jewry in eastern Europe (where they were regularly persecuted in institutionalized pogroms). People who believed in Pagan religions were persecuted as 'witches', and it was illegal to denty the presence of Christ in the Sacrament in both Spain and Italy.
Freedom to practice the religion of your choice, or no religion at all, is a modern value, and is far from a universal one, just like rights for women or children. For tolerance to flourish, cultural norms have to change. This is slowly happening in the Muslim world, but it's slow going, and you can't force someone to change their culture. We in the USA spearheaded that freedom, and look at us, we still can't get it right.

it is rare to find other religions in saudi arabia, but there are small congregations among the christian expatriates, and that is not disallowed.
It is unislamic to disallow other religion to be practised anywhere, even the Prophet had non-muslims neighbours during his time.
i think its just that the non-muslim groups are so small such that their place of worship is not erected or made known to others.

Wow you can't in Saudi? In the Quran it's been said that your religion is yours and mine is mine. This is widely accepted by Muslims as a green light to allow Non-Muslims to practice their religion.
What's going on over there?
