Please do not put a religious reason. What event do you think will signal the start to the final part of our society as we know it? This could be like, a great leader uniting all the countries and ushering in a golden age. Contact with extra terrestrial life. When someone WMD's a main country and sparks WW3, maybe only leaving a couple million surviving. An asteroid smashing us to bits. Medicines that end disease and aging, perhapse like mind transfer to cloned bodies. Any of these or another answer. What do you think will be the huge event that completely changes mankind?

Apparently some people do not want to follow the "Please do not put a religious reason." I wrote earlier. I am not trying to be anti-religious, or disagree with the end of the world in anyone's view point. But the purpose of this question is to ask what event, non-religious, will change the face of mankind. Thank you.

Disease and war. It might be an asteroid, but I think disease and war will create the greatest change.

Not to sound like a sci-fi nut, but I think that when we get public evidence that we are not the only life be it intelligent or not in the universe. This would put into question all of our faiths no matter the religion, humanity has always been at the top of the ladder with innovation, intelligence and population. If there should ever come a time when that is not the case we will have no choice up to become one "race" and rise to whatever challenge may face us. I am not saying that an alien race would be hostile, but they would definitely be more advanced than us just for the fact that they got here. Humanity has never been satisfied with second place. But history has show than whenever an intelligent species in our case humans, has wither been more intelligent or stronger than someone we exploit the weaker or less intelligent individual. So in our case what if an alien species hundreds, thousands, millions or billions of years more advanced than us came for a visit Do you think they are going to take pitty on us or just move us aside. Personally I think either way humanity would be in for a huge wake up call, one that would most definitely in time bring us together.

Well, I wouldn't wait around for a great leader. Yes, there will be cures to diseases, and maybe people will live longer, but then they'll die of something else. Forget extraterrestrials. Global waming might be a problem that would affect society. But as for the thing that is already having a great affect on society currently--for good and not so good--well, your sitting in front of it. The computer with Internet connections is changing the way we spend our time, work, communicate, socialize, etc. I think we've only seen a hint of the changes it will bring about. Hang on.

The World will finally see that Aliens do exist and have been hidden from us by our governments for years. The governments will collapse, the world will unite under one belief and that belief will be the desire to exist. We will not be exterminated. We will survive. In order to secure our survival we must be a polite and peacfull species.
Everything public will be recorded and watched by anyone who wants to watch. All the streets, markets, shops, any public place will be recorded to insure the peace is kept throught the world.
If you kill, you will be killed. If you take what does not belong to you, your life will be taken from you. If you rape and take innocence from someone, your innocence and life will be taken from you. The punishment for crime will be immediate and without mercy. The executions will be public. We will be come a peace full society as a result of our fear of immediate and permanent resolutions.
We will combine our technologies and resources and explore the Great Frontier (Space). We will meet new species and share our knowledge with thiers. We will find new resources so our world is not depleted.
We will find out that God does exist. He is just a little different than we all imagined.

Oh, let's go ahead and be optimistic. I'll say the event that will change the world as we know it will be when every man and women (or at least a vast majority) learns to tolerate their fellow man. Not necessarily under a common leader, but just a little bit of Unity in Diversity.

one day there will be as great leader who will unite many nations and usher in a "supposed" golden era
he will make a peace treaty with Israel and create a global economy with one currency
he will then proceed to break all promises and treaties and demand that people worship him
this event will be sparked by the sudden disappearance of millions of people from the face of the earth

There will be a leader that will come, probably from the USA considering it is the most tolerant country. He will unite the world and bring an end to wars, terrorism etc.

Extant Religion, Look at History - Man has learned nothing - ie.- Roman Empire - The moral decay and depravity did them in - Now look at whats going on in America and the World. Compare the two - Your best bet is to look to and take the Religious road.

I believe the event that will change mankind will be the cure of AIDS. Because this disease is no longer consider a gay disease, because heterosexuals are getting. This disease is killing more people in the US and Africa, and if we can find a cure, the lives we save will be phenomenal.

There will be a great leader (as the world knows him to be) who will come out as a uniter of the nations, and he will "unify" every nation to live under a one-world government. When that time comes and he is comes into full power and requires our total allegiance I know I won't be here.

You have listed some good scenarios, but the only most likely is that, given that we have the WMD's, that we are in disagreement about who knows God's will, that people are fearful of each other and hate abounds; it is quite likely that we will use WMDs, destroy much of civilization and perhaps then, we will be united in our efforts tostop this madness of terrorism and retaliation.
