Someone once told me this and I thought it was very important. I only have girls but I may possible have a boy some day. I teach my girls to call their parts vaginas and if I have a boy, I'll teach him that it is a penis. The reason I use the medical terms; If my kids come up to me calling it something else, I'll have to ask where they heard it from. I've told all my friends and family what we refer to their parts as and I tell them Do NOT teach them other names for their parts. If by chance my girls ever happen to be sexually abused and I hope it never happens, it will be easier to know if something has been done to them when they call their privates something other than I have taught them.

When my son was a baby I always said I would teach him the correct terms, however he was talking well before the potty training phase. AND BELIEVE ME I changed my mind. I started calling it a pee-pee, but thats just because he has a way of just saying what is on his mind as most kids do, I would be mortified if we were out in public and he said, "Hey mom my Penis hurts".........

Teach him the correct words for his privates. IE: penis, testes. Just as he would know the correct words for the rest of his body parts like his fingers or toes. There is no need to make up cutesy names for them.

as he's at the stage where he's beginning to learn language (words, even if he can't speak yet), definitely use the "real words." It worked with my children.

Using the proper terms for body parts teaches children to respect their bodies and not be ashamed of them, as saying "slang words" like "pee pee" and "wee wee" would teach them: That the real words are too embarrassing for Mommy to say. Which, of course, is NOT the message we want to convey to them.

This is a penis and this is a bum.

If you give childlike names or show embarassment, he will grow up being ashamed of his organs. If you can call an arm and arm and a leg a leg, why cant you call it a penis and not a weenee? Let him be comfortable with his body.

We always used the proper name for our sons "private parts"

I know this sounds sad and unfortunate, but because of the dangers of child predators, I always wanted to make sure that my sons were protected and part of that protection is making sure they know the proper names for their body parts...

As we were teaching them "where's your nose, eyes, hands, etc, we would ask, where is your butt, where is your penis"

He wont understand anyway right now. When they are toddlers, they begin to get curious and then you should start calling it a penis..not "private part"

I have 3 children and only one of them a boy. As he was growing up we called it his pee pee. When he got old enough to know we started to use the correct term of penis with him.

I have taught my boys to say penis from day one. At least this is something I will have to teach them only once.
