There are a few theories as to the purpose of pubic hair. The most widely accepted one is that pubic hairs collect chemicals secreted by the apocrine gland, allowing bacteria to decompose them. This releases pheromones, which excite potential mates. In this sense, pubic hair serves a purpose similar to that of armpit hair.
In modern times the scent of a sweaty genital region, like the scent of a sweaty armpit, has become extremely unpopular. This smell, however, and the resulting disgust, has nothing to do with the aforementioned pheromone release. It is arguable that the sexual arousal caused by new (to the western world) practices of removing genital hair may outweigh the decrease of the pheromone.
It is also important to note that, like armpit hair, pubic hair holds liquids, thereby lubricating moving parts that rub together. This makes for smoother movement, thereby reducing irritation of the skin in places like the inner thigh.
It is also possible that the hairs protect the penis or vagina from cold weather and small foreign particles.

It is believed that the functions of pubic hair include the dissemination of pheromones and protection from the friction of sexual intercourse. Natural selection may also have sustained it because it can show a potential sexual partner that the other person is sexually mature and can reproduce. Pubic hair and the growth between the tops of the legs and the buttocks, like under arm hair, helps to lubricate the areas, making movement smoother and more comfortable.
Although there is no definitive theory.

Actually, the friction idea is pretty good, but usually hairs on the body (except the head) are used for protection. Eyelashes protect our eyes, and it seems right that pubic hair would do this as well.

I would think to reduce heat, and burns and dirt and things....back when they were running around half naked and no panties I assume. Also the reduction in friction during intercourse, and maybe for recognition.....If you are running around naked and you don't have a language and all you do is grunt....and you need a mate to reproduce maybe you find out who are ready to mate by if they are "haired out". Usually the growth of pubic hair comes with puberty and girls are able to have babies at that time..

the most probable reason is becuase of heat regulation. Armpit hair and pubic hair cover areas where alot of blood passes through and keeping it insulated helps keep the blood warm helping the body conserve energy.

It's use is to provide a better distribution of the scent from our glands... more surface area than shaved or smooth.
The hormones present in the area are why the hair grows there.
Not to mention it keeps the important stuff warm during the winter.

i was just thinking about that the other day! and why armpit hair too? I mean, the rest of our bodies are virtuallly hairless.
I think it's to reduce friction and chafing. Hair is located where we have things, um, hanging and rubbing together. Arms at our sides and legs during walking.
That's what i came up with.

the purpose for pubic hair is to keep all dirt, slimy goo and other unnecessary fluids and debris from entering your body. the hair is there for protection. semen, powder, those who put deoderant down there, lint, sweat, all that and more get to wipe their feet on your carpet and stay there instead of entering your body and setting up infection........................for the men, its there to catch some of the drippings a lady will leave on you during intercourse that way she won't be rubbin herself into your skin and probably rubbing and infection in your skin also. so a word to the wise. no matter how hot it gets down there. wear cotton drawers and don't shave.

Our entire body is covered in hair, more so in some places than in others. It is to help protect against any kind of germ .
