Format and deleting are two different things. If you delete files and programs, they are technically retrievable. If you formatted your hard drive, then it totally wiped all memory and allocated space for new programs.....so it is irreversible. You cant get back data on a formatted hard drive or disk for that matter.
If your hard drive broke down or if your hard drive fails, then its possible to recover data. But once you manually do a format of your hard drive, then its gone.

There's no programs to do it. If you backup up your HD, then u can reload it, otherwise u have to take it to a specialist (not your average computer store) of these sort of things and that costs A LOT. If there is extremely valuable data, u might want to do it, otherwise it's really not worth it. It's a technique that the military use to rebuild data (not necessarily accurate reconstruction though) from HDs that have been wiped out. That's why all government computer HDs have to be burned because otherwise data can still be retrievable.

There are several programs that may be capable of retrieving deleted files even after a format. Look for a program called
GETMYDATA and Easy Recovery Pro. I always use both of these programs which always recover your data.

It MAY be possible to recover your data using a company or some software, however the software is not cheap and the companies are even more expensive. The question is how bad do you need this data?

you formatted it then its all lost. But there are some programs that will actually restore it if you didnt erase it all, but i have that burned to a disk and you have to boot up with it. Activedisk or something like that it was called.

It sounds to me that somehow that drive got reformated. Of course that would be a disaster. It is also possible that the drive is ok but you lost the mapping to it or you lost the driver that makes it possible to get to the drive. Get out the Buffalo CD and reinstall the drive. I would contact Buffalo to consult with them before you did that however.
