Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida (geographically it's Southern but otherwise...), South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia.
Some people call West Virginia southern. I'm not so sure I agree with that.
No part of Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, or Delaware can be considered Southern in any way.
My picks:
Favs: Texas, Alabama, Mississippi (especially Southhaven), west and middle Tennessee
Okay: Georgia, Arkansas, east Tennessee
Not-so-favs: Kentucky (especially Louisville), Florida, Virginia
-My favs: they're my favs b/c of the natural beauty and people
-Okay: these states have a lot to offer but just doesn't suit my personality. I have nothing against them, though.
-My not-so-favs: natural beauty abounds in each of these states, but the people can be pretty rude.

For me, my favorite state is Tennessee. I have relatives there, and my maternal grandmother was raised in the Appalachian Mountains. I have visited often, and always feel like I have come home instead of being somewhere visiting. Second would be where I live, South Carolina.. great things to do, beautiful weather, mountains at one edge of the state, and beach at the other. Least favorite is anything souther of where I am right now! I despise the heat, and anything further south, (souther!LOL) is too, too hot for me! I've never seen Virginia, or Arkansas. I went to Mississippi once with a friend who was a truck driver, and it'll be fine with me if I NEVER go back there. It was 3:30am and 103 degrees F when we pulled into Indianola, Miss. I was conviced I had died and gone to hell! LOL Well, so much for my travel input.

MY favorite above all others is simple - Texas - The Lone Star State - Why because it has been home to me and my family for 30 years. My daughter was born here, my sister and grandmother are both buried here and because - you have everything you could want to do or need in one wonderful state - Think about it - there is a reason it takes 12-16 hours to drive from one end of Texas to the other... You have mountains, plateaus, beaches, cities, ranches in the country....
My other favorite would be Georgia - why - Because of Savannah Ga and the history the sate has. It is such a proud state and remained the Queen of the South even through the war.... Savannah never waivered.
The other states - Hmmm don't get started on those - they need to get a backbone again and stand up for what is right, but they also need to be able to accept their own responsibilities for their mistakes and faults - their crime rate or poverty rates or homeless rates are not everyone Else's faults - not to say others cant help but I am a firm believer in helping those who are attempting to help themselves...

I was born in Arkansas, had a few bad memories there, so I will never stay there again in my life. I spent a few years in Georgia, my wife was born there, I have a few fond memories of that state.
I went to school and still live in California, as well as retired out of the military there. I have loads of fond memories there from high school, college and lots of friends. In about 2-3 years or less I am going to finally retire in Mississippi, because it is between Arkansas and Georgia, so making it easy to get to my wife's birth place of Atlanta, Georgia and my birth place of Little Rock, Arkansas.
I like the southern states because they have not been paved over by concrete. Where I live now in California, it is difficult to find a tree that really understand that it is in fact a tree. There are still open spaces and lots of space between the homes.
I selected Mississippi because not only does it give us assess to the places of our families, but we want a few acres of land and reside in a rural area, since we have never been in that setting before.
I have a good friend that settled in South Carolina.
I hope this has been of some use to you, good luck.

I like Texas. Texans have a pride in their state like no other. It's a big state and openly rough and western.
I liked the people in North Carolina when I visited. Store clerks, everyone we met were so nice, it almost seemed too familiar, but I live in Maryland now and everyone here is too cosmopolitan to be nice to strangers.
West Virginia is the closest state to Maryland with Hillbillies. They are the Maryland and Virginian's Poland.
In Texas they have Aggie jokes, the state is so big they don't have to go out of state for jokes about dumb people!

I love the south because it is warmer. I've only visited the east coast states so only know about those. I would have to say Florida. Great beaches. Lots of palm trees.Gotta love it.
