I'd tell someone in authority right quick, because when you refuse, said student might go to the dean and say you solicited sex to give him/her a better grade. Hopefully you have a witness in your favor, but more than likely not.

If the student did it to you, more than likely was offered to other professors too.

Pretty sticky situation you're in. Good luck.

I work in tertiary education also, even though not direct with the students, as I am in Administration. I would say, explain to the student about getting some tutorial help. Some one might be willing to give lessons on the subject. However, to accept the sex is to say to the student, they can do that all their life to get through things, they will do in the work place if they feel the need arise. It is not your fault the student will fail, do not be pushed into this situation, the other thing is that the student might tell other friends that is the way to pass your courses. Do you really want that? Even if it is tempting. resist.

Above all you have a moral obligation to do the right thing. Before this student was failing did you as a good teacher inform student. Did you tell student to get a tutor or instruct student that although it is most likely your grade is a failing one ,there are extra credit or summer credits offered. If these things were not offered and documented or witness by another party, and you choose to get your jollys off. Buddy you are looking at serious jail time. Even if you don't accept offer you can still get in trouble because student is desperate. Your best bet is to inform your superior.

Have sex with her and enjoy. And then Fail her. She really needs to be taught a lesson. If this subject was required to obtain a professional qualification, then she should have worked and studied harder. Wish her ever success in the profession she has now chosen - prostitution!

Are you insane? A professional qualification requires professional behaviour! Give them the grade they deserve and if you are really a university lecturerer and you're asking this in all seriousness - you should find yourself a different job! Before you get sacked!

No.

Not only will you lose your job any any chance of ever teaching again (don't kid yourself it won't get out - you know better than that) but the student will go on to get a job they are not qualified for, fail and be out of work without and qualifications. Worse still, if the professional qualification is something like a nurse / doctor / psychologist etc. etc. their incompetence could get someone killed.

I am assuming that this student is a girl. You need to let her know now, that propositioning is not going to get her where she wants to be. Make it understood that its not an option. You absolutely have to report it though. Remember David Gale??

UPDATE: Don't give these rude and insensitive people a second thought. I'm glad that you asked rather than just taking the offer. Do the right thing. That's all that matters.

You could pretend it hasn't happened and mark them on their work as you see fit. However they're getting away with unacceptable behaviour then, not to mention unprofessional. You need to report this to the head of the school, because the student should probably not be allowed to continue on the course. At the very least they should be denied assessment in your subject. Can you provide evidence that the student made this request?

You have to even ask? The answer isn't obvious to you?

You give them the grade they deserve for the student they are, so they learn to prosper by honest effort not device. So they learn about consequences. Think of the lesson you will be teaching them if you accept the sex and up their grade. It staggers me that this is a dilema.

You would be abusing your position, and degrading the teaching profession by accepting this offer.

Getting sex from a student to give him/her a passing grade is very unprofessional. Also, if your boss hears about it then you could be fired for it. It's not worth risking your job or your reputation - and give this student a clear signal that the only way to get a passing grade and to get ahead in life is to work for it.

you do know the right thing to do, but in case you need some encouragement here's a few reasons to NOT have sex with her.
#1 it could be a trap and you could be walking into it
#2 it will get out eventually, because those things always do, do you want to lose your good standing at the school etc...?
#3 you will have to live with the fact that you let someone cheat and doesn't have the right to the degree.
