Keep in mind jobs are first offered to locals no matter how qualified you may be. Once the job is offered to the public via newspaper or some other posting, may an employer then look into hiring a non-national. You can get around this by getting hired on a more temporary basis (where they will probably pay you under the table).

It's not impossible (there are some places that will go ahead and sponsor you for a work permit). Barbados has a lot of jobs to offer in the tourism sector, just expect to make a lot less than what is paid in the US. The cost of living in Barbados isn't cheap, so keep that in mind as well. Your grocery bill will just about double unless you plan on eating out all the time. Gas is more expensive (public transportation is rather cheap), and just about anything else aside from liquor will cost you more. Expect your paycheck to be half of what you're accustomed to. Nevertheless, I think Barbados is worth it. You just need to think everything over as many people have different expectations when they decide to live there vs vacation there.
