We are expecting our first and I am wondering what the chances of having a red head are. I am blonde. My brother is a dirty blond/light brown and both of my parents are deep brown brunettes. My husband and his 2 siblings have beautiful bright red hair. His mother is blonde and his father has sandy brown hair. The red hair runs in his family. Does anyone know what our changes are of having a red head?

If you are a true blonde then more than likely no. Red hair is a recessive gene while blonde is a dominant gene. So it's more than likely your child will not be a red head.

Also, babies hair changes as they get older. My husband is a red head while I am what is considered a strawberry blonde, so when our son was born he had really dark red hair. However, he's almost 6 months now and it's turning lighter so it looks like it may not stay red.

So even if your child may come out a red head they may not stay that way. Congratulations!

I have been researching this also since we are expecting our first child and Daddy is a redhead! So far in his family he has 2 nieces who were born to parents without red hair, but they are both redheads...so from what I have seen on this site that I am listing he will always pass on the redhair gene, but it is all up to me at this point! If the baby does not have the red hair, they will at least be a carrier of the gene and have the chance of giving you a grandchild with red hair, if that is any consolation! (Also, ask a hairdresser if there is any red in your hair at all...sometimes this can help give you a clue...mine helped me find some red floating around in mine so my hopes are high!)

I am not sure what your chances are. My husband and I were dirty blonds as kids and now have brown hair. We ended up with a brunette, a redhead, and a blond. Good luck!

I'm a redhead. My dad had black hair, my mom brown... though hers does look auburn under bright lights. Redheads are 4% of the population, you just never know... I got my exact color from my great-grandpa. I've heard the gene skips a generation or two. Just wait and see!

I have black hair and my husband has red, and we are the proud parents of a little red-headed boy. I think that the red haired gene is more dominant when introduced. Don't be surprised if you have a red-headed baby.

Also, get used to being asked about who has the red hair in the family as your baby grows. I still hear that one all the time, and my boy's 5 now!!

There is no telling! ha ha, My cousin is blond as can be and her husband was dark dark almost black-brown hair. She had a red head, I guess my great great grandfather was completely red head and her daughter caught those genes, pretty crazy right? It doesn't just depend on mom and dad, it can go back generations!

I don't know because i never thought I would have a strawberry blonde blue eyed little boy. My husband is a sandy blond with blue eyes and I have very dark brown hair with hazel colored eyes.

We have a lot of redheads in our family and seems to skip a generation(not always).

hair patterns usually follow the paternal (father) line, but I often (wivestale warning) heard that redheads like to skip a generation.
