Most boards at the minute are made of 5 or 7 ply Canadian Maple. which is pressed into shape and given a concave for added strenght, and then coated to give it a smooth finish,
as for the future. i have to agree ^^^^^^ Carbon fibre is amazing, but at this moment in time, its hella expensive!

mostly wood right now, but carbon fiber is the next big thing. it is stronger than steel but it is much lighter.
