The anonymous rhyme was made up by a writer as an alluring little tune to sell newspapers even though in reality her stepmother suffered 18 blows, her father 10 — some believe that this has served to ensure Lizzie Borden's place in American folklore.

The motive, if she did indeed kill them was to prevent her stepmother from inheriting the entire Borden fortune. Andrew, her Father had already transferred some of his properties to her. He did this by taking away from his unmarried daughters to give to her. This was entirely legal to do at the time, even though Lizzy was in her 30s. Her stepmother was afraid that if Andrew died,she would be penniless. In answer to the second part, it took about 29 whacks for her stepmother and 30 for Andrew. A number of theories abound and quite a few question if she did it or had it done by someone else.

I think that she did not want her stepmother to inherit what she felt was hers. There was evidence that she had been on her period so I am wondering if PMS had anything to do with it?

They say it took 40 whacks, but so far there really is no proof that Lizzy was guilty. Just circumstantial evidence.

It was in fact 18 and 10 "whacks". There is unending speculation as to why or even if she actually commited the crimes. She was not convicted. The murders remain unsolved to this day.

I observed a instruct that reported that Lizzy and the maid could have been lesbian enthusiasts. possibly her mothers and fathers caught her and the maid fooling around, a controversy ensued, and Lizzy snapped, killing her mothers and fathers.
