The other planets are just masses which get caught in orbit around the sun. However, it's a near impossibility that with all the stars, each with masses orbitting them, that we are the only planet with life.

firstly you can not say that in such a big universe earth is the only planet with life...we still don't know everything about the universe....
then, you must be knowing that any planet travels on it's orbit because of the gravitational pull of sun and the other planets.....
and as researches are going on for proving existance of life on mars may be the others planets like venus also once had life but no proper balance which could have increased the carbon dioxide value in it's atmosphere, i just think this could have been possible but the truth we don't know so we cannot say that the other planet are useless.....

Your fact/assumption that the Earth is the only planet with life has no bearing on the actual question. A better question would be, "Why do planets exist?"
Here's an analagous question to yours:
If I'm the only person that eats green hot dogs, then what are all the other people for?

We aren't the only planet that has life on it, that is so very improbable it's funny. The universe goes beyond infinity so it must have life on it, right? If we were the only life force in the universe than we'd be alone and that's not the point of life. Life is about finding a partner, so earth must have a partner. The partner is probably so far out there we just haven't seen it yet.

First of all, who says we are the only planet with life? I find that highly unlikely. Secondly, do planets have to be FOR something?

Do you really think in this vast universe that we are the only planet with life? I don't think so.

Balance and equilibrium. Without the other planets (in our solar system), Earth would not be in the unique position it is to support life as we know it.

We often think that our solar system is one unique one in the entire universe. It is unique in the sense that it would take a great coincidence for another star to have the EXACT solar system as ours.
We are wrong. If our average star (SUN) can have 9 planets (or more), why not other stars. We have to accept the fact the Earth was not made for us, but made by luck. Mars was not made for us, but made by luck.
"Stars does not revolve around you, you revolve around the stars."

it is for balance did you know that if the sun was just a hair further we would freeze and if it were any closer to earth we would burn up. and that the moon controls the oceans keeping them in there places otherwise they would over run the entire earth. other planets have their jobs to do as well but the info your looking for is out there just research them. smiles God Bless...
