The goal is to get the pH level in your pool to about 7.
The pH specifies the number or concentration of hydrogen ions in the water solution. For acidic solution the pH number is low (for acid rain it is less then 5), for pure water it is 7 and for hand soap, being alkaline it is about (~9). To neutralize acidic solution we add alkaline compound or a solution and vice versa.
1. Measure the pH level by using a standard kit.
2 Add acid if pH is high (from the pool supply house)
or
base if pH is low(use baking soda you can by in the supper market). This occurs more frequently.
3. Add the chemicals to your skimmer while the pump is running.
4. Add little at a time (2-3lb of baking soda, for acid much less and best to refer to the manufactures recommendations ) and remeasuring the pH by letting the water circulate for a while (10 to 20 min for say about 5,000 gal pool 18’x10’x 4’).

i used to work at leslies pool supply and if you go in with a sample of your pool water they can find out the exact levels and tell you how much of what product you need to fix it. be careful with advice on here because a lot of what you use depends on what type of pool you have and what area you live in.
