I have a rare genetic disorder and want to set up a site for kids with the same condition, including a picture gallery etc and forum but need it to be secure, obviously to protect the kids. How difficult is this?

define secure?
If you mean just password authentication.
then you can use one of the many free scripts available like
Snitz (ASP)

These are quite easy to install.
Just drop it into your server root. and bring up the setup and config pages and you should be done in less than half an hour. 15 minutes, if you have done this (like I have) before...

Very easy, but i doubt that people would attack or hack it. There are some things like SMF that I used to use but i was "defaced". You can encrypt the database or have it encrypted to 128 bit. I own a few websites and I have my own managed hosting account and if you would like to use one of my servers let me know at zwacka@gmail.com
