Is it preferable to wear white or black? I had an argument with someone who said that black would be appropriate because it prevents rays from getting absorbed while white allows the rays to be absorbed. Is this true? I thought vice versa would be correct.

Lighter colors are cooler to wear, but they also need to be loosely fitted.

On a hot sunny day is recommended to wear white clothing because black clothing are absorbing the sun light and the sun heat.

On a hot and sunny day, it's said that wearing white clothing deflects the rays of the sun and keeps you somewhat cooler than wearing darker colors that absorb the heat and keep you warm.

Well they must never had science!! Dark clothing absorbs heat therefore on a hot day black would be the worst choice of clothing. Lighter clothing reflects heat keeping you cooler. So the vice versa is correct.

the color of the clothes isn't what prevents uv rays from getting absorbed it is the clothes themselves that is the barrier. You would definately be more comfortable in white since you won't get as hot. However, if you choose a tan or toupe type color it will also help with insects. Expecially mosquitoes, they are attracted to dark colors.

White reflects, black absorbs. Col pastels always a must in the sun, below is a website you can go to that sells clothing designed to keep out the harmful rays of the sun.

I can see your friends point. The Black would stop more light from passing through than the white. So I suppose that would be safer but much more uncomfortable because you would get hot rather fast. Here in South Africa the advise children to have sunscreen on even if they are wearing a shirt because the sun does find its way through.
Maybe some one else could add to my comment.

I wear black all year long. I have t simply make sure that in the summertime I wear lighter fabrics and haltar tops, as I love to wear black. Yes, black retains more heat, hwever , all colour retains heat. If yor preference is to wear white then go right on ahead. yes, white is cooler. just think of what y like, have 4 or 5 out fits to mix and match ..and you can actually wear black and white which is strickingly lovely!!! A beautiful bleached white is g=fabulous. I have found thqat to keep whites really white, use "BIZ" and bleach to soak them in....hunters use Biz to get the bloodstains out of their hunting clothing. In order to keep or maintain a black in washing use a cup of vinegar in the wash water. it will HOLD the colour and will NOT fade it. I am saying this to save yo money. It however is up to you. You neednt wait for the rinse water for the vinegar, as the washing alone will take the dye out. One more thing, Top keep yur clothing fresh and soft, use a bit of fabric softener in "The Wash" ~ your clotyhing regardless of what y choose will be fresh, not need to be ironed, and you're of and running! Happy Summer!
It is said to only wear white in the summertime, well I disagree! Be happy with what you are wearing. I am!

black absorbs the heat and detracts the rays away from your skin and therefore protects it - this is the reason why kohl is worn around the eyes in hot countries- to protect them. White deflects the rays but your exposed skin will be hotter than the fabric - so wear sun factor and you will be fine.

This may or may not effect your decision, but: Fragrances from hair sprays, perfumes, deodorants and soap can cover these chemical cues. They can also function to either enhance or repel the host seeking drive. Dark colors capture heat and make most people more attractive to mosquitoes. Light colors refract heat and are generally less attractive. Detergents, fabric softeners, perfumes and body odor can counteract the effects of color. In most cases, only the mosquito knows why one person is more attractive than another.
