It's for safety. Turning the headlight on increases visibility. In fact, several car manufacturers have taken this principle and applied it to their vehicles. That's what "Daytime Running Lights" are for- to make your vehicle more visible at a distance.
Under certain conditions, vehicles (motorcycles and cars) seem to blend in with the environment, and can create hazardous situations.
It may seem a silly idea, but consider this:
You see the motorcycles coming, don't you?

Headlights on has always been proven to reduce accidents... so it doesn't surprise me that probably most cycle manufacturers probably have wired them to be on when running just like modern cars..... also on older bikes I think it is a law when you pass your motorcycle license that you need to drive with it on...

Because motorists--cars, buses, vans, trucks--are used to looking only for similar vehicles. We've become sort of automatons when behind the wheel. The light on a cycle is a safety measure to make them more visible. And as a cyclist I can attest to the fact that it works.

this is an easy one... They are like running lights in cars. Alot of car drivers dont look for and never see motorcyclists. So with a headlight on it's a little easier to notice them... Although it didn't help me in my accident...

Because motorcycles are hard enough to see from a long distance away...keeping the headlamp on ensures that vehicles a good ways away will be able to see them...

All good. Everyone dead on.
I will add that there are aftermarket "flashers" that will make your headlights pulsate to increase visibility even further.
But basically, it's a safety thing.
