I would stay away from Gateway, Dell, Toshiba Satellites, HP Pavilions, Compaq Presarios, Acer Travelmates, or just about any laptop that you can go into a big box store and buy.

I would recommend only business class laptops, the quality and reliability are well worth the extra cost. IBM Thinkpads, HP business, Toshiba Tetras, Panasonic Toughbooks, Segar. They are built with much higher quality parts, and usually have more stable chipsets for the various on-board features, and can also take alittle more of a beating.

Working as the laptop technician I have really seen the difference between these two classes of laptops with the repairs that I have had to do. I had way to many consumer class laptops come in with major problems, motherboard components burned out, shorts, chips and connectors detaching from the motherboard etc. Where as the business class I would get faulty ram, burned out back lite etc.

I personally would chose a Pentium 3 Compaq Armada, or Panasonic Thoughbook over any consumer class laptop currently on the market.

So far from my experience I have had the worse problems in are Sony's(for falling apart with a good bump), Dell's (for random failures), Toshiba Satellights, HP Pavilions, and Compaq Presarios (for motherboard failures).

I personally have a HP Compaq NX5000, which is one of the models that replaced the Armada line when hp bought Compaq, and it is a tank, I almost never shut it down and I have never had a single problem with it. It can't really do much with games because it has a Intel graphics chipset, but stability is more inportant to me then graphics.

I have used HP for the last 5 years of my life, and compared to a dell inspiration I had I choose to use the HP pavilion. acer is an ok computer system for the money but im not too fond of them. Alienware is by far the best out there though. They are custom made and have basically every possible thing you can think of thrown in being its totally customizable. Alienware for performance. HP for speed and power. Dell for the money.

Since you can now dual boot windows into a macbook and macbook pro. It is hands down apple.

If you have to have non-mac

Acer Ferrari
Falcon Northwest

High power machines. They use quality parts and don't skimp on anything.
But I mplore ot go to an apple store and check out what they have to offer you world of computing before you buy another windows pc.

HP and Sony because they are Light weight, reliable, powerful, and expensive as you know what. You can read some reviews at the following sites. I have used the HP's all my life.

Oh yeah, do not even think about Dell and Gateway; they are crappy. Have you seen the latest Dell commercial. Its a DELL??? What do they mean by that. I don't think they have been around that long to even say that.

well it depeds on lotta factors..
well if you're a busy business oriented guy i think you should chose lenovo thikpad as it has many security and business oreinted features like crash revival, antivirus recovery etc...
well if you're more into freakin out like me i think you should get those laptops with a graphics card and lotta ram like the acer ferrari series and the acer 1690 wlmi...cool laptops at cheapest rates they are!! my brother owns one for the last 3 years and its still not outdated in features!also there's compaq presario..the whilte colour is mesmerising!!
if you're more of a show off type i think you better search for your configuration in a sony viao! cool laptop to look at..
and another piece of advice..never opt for an nvidia grafx..always choose ati radeon atleast for the near future
never buy : Packard Bell, fujiotsu siemens, dell, hp and other brands.
all the best buddy
