(laugh) Actually they do.

My wife and I went to China with a group of other potential parents to adopt our daughter a few years ago.

We spent most of our time in central China (Wuhan), which is not really Westernized.

People were staring at us all the time on the street. We were like the only white people in the whole city, which reminded me of a sprawling 1970's Pittsburgh.

And the tour guide (she was Chinese) told us the same thing: The commoners not only had to stare at us because we were so different, but they also had trouble telling us apart.

I had to laugh. We all had different hair color (some had no hair), a few guys had beards, and we were much more vaired in physical shape... and they STILL had trouble telling us apart, as much as we had trouble telling THEM apart.

Amazing. The old joke is true.

Chinese people in China think all Caucasians look the same. However, overseas Chinese can probably tell the difference as well as other Caucasians b/c the overseas Chinese are usually more educated and better traveled.

Just like a Caucasian living in Asia could tell Chinese and Japanese apart better than a Caucasian in Europe or North America.

I think I read somewhere in psychology its actually accepted that most people generally can only recognize the differences in their own race. So when someone says they all look a like, they aren't always being stupid, they very well may not be able to distinguish differences except on the individual relationship level.

But I could be wrong and have misread something..

I believe that it is easier for most people to recognise
small differences in people of their own race. People are widely different, worldwide and within races, so it is dodgy to generalize. If a person has grown up around people of all different races, they probably notice small facial and bodily differences easily. But, I think, if a person were to grow up seeing only one or two races, it would be more difficult to develop the ability to make fine distictions.
Therefore: "they all look the same."

They might, but i dont know why. Most chinese ppl have all the same features, but white ppl come in all different hair colors, eye colors, and hair texture. Where almost all chinese ppl i've seen have straight dark hair and have ivory color skin, with dark almond shaped eyes.
