I would think so, at least, they wouldnt be able to tell similar ethnic groups that were very different from them apart if they hadnt spent much time with the groups.

It's similar to the way that europeans would not be able to tell asian, african, or native ethnic groups apart at first sight. We havent grown up in the cultures, and thus dont have a lot of experience as to which traits belong to certain cultures.

I'm sorry, may I check, do you mean if in the eyes of Chinese, all European look alike?

To certain extend, yes.

Till now, almost all indian look the same to me.

All Indonesian seems to look the same too. However, after staying sometime with them, I can now tell if they are from Batak, Central Java, Sulawisi, Ambon etc. Not 100% right, but I am almost there.

Bottonline is to be familar, to be exposed to. Else, everything seems the same.

By the way, I am a Chinese studied in US.

I guess you're wondering that probably since you may think all Chinese look alike that they may think the same of you?

Sometimes it's difficult to tell the different asian races apart, like Korean/Japanese/Chinese, but there are differences. The individuals look different from one another.

When you're not always exposed to people of a certain race/ethnicity, you tend to group them by features. So it is entirely possible that some Chinese might think that Europeans or Africans look alike. Good point.

hmm I think he implies that he sees all chinese people as looking alike/similar. I find that tends to be the case when one looks at any unfamiliar group of people. Like blonds, I tends to notice all preppy blond people look alike.. same goes for hispanics, and african americans, but I can tell asians apart really easily because I am one. So yeah I'm sure people from china might find difficulty decerning people from other cultures as well.

I think it depends if you are a Chinese in China or a Chinese overseas. Chinese in China probably think everyone looks alike, unless they are well educated and very well traveled.
The Chinese overseas however can usually tell people from other nations, because tend to be more educated and better traveled than their fellow counterparts in China.

The exception to this is people from other Eastern Asian countries, such as Japan, Korea, Malaysia, etc. Nearly all, if not all Chinese (whether in China or overseas) can tell other Asian nations apart.

They think all white people or black people look the same because they have different features in their faces that distinguish what they look like. So when they look at other races, their eyes automatically look for these particular characteristics which are actually basically the same in other races. We all look at particular characteristics in order to tell eachother apart. The characteristics that Chinese people use to tell eachother apart, are different characteristics than what white people use to tell eachother apart. In general.
