Well, obviously the people that have answered this are not thinking correctly and/or have never smoked marijuana in their lives. I used to be an avid smoker and I still can't believe how naive people in this country are. Not one person that answered mentioned alcohol and the fact that it is responible for thousandsn and thousands of deaths in this country every year. People who smoke pot are not even close to being crackheads and whoever said that is an idiot. I would much rather stumble upon 10 people who are stoned while walking down the street thatn 10 people who are drunk. The latter of the above statements usually results into some kind of fight or people pissing all over the place or destroying something. If you are going to be that person who is against the use of marijuana but condones the use or uses alcohol, needs to take a closer look at themselves. Alcohol impairs your decision making a great deal, hence the amount of people who drive drunk. When was the last time you heard of a peron who was stoned getting into a major accident and killing people? I have yet to hear that story. All legalizing pot would do is cut down on the amount of drug dealers that there are in this country. If pot was legal, I would grow my own, and I'm sure that most people would. Stop listening to things that people made up in the 60's and start living in the present. Alcohol is bad and should be illegal. Did you ever think of that?

Pot should be decriminalized which is somewhat differnt from legalized. It should be controled to some extent. It should be illegal to distribute it or provide it to minors. That being said, it is not the role of government to protect us from ourselves. If it was, icecream and candy should be made illegal as they promote obesity. The main reasons that pot remains illegal are political. It would difficult to tax pot as it is easy to grow. If it were legal, many people that now drink alcohol would probably get stoned instead. This would cut deeply into tax revenues. Another major reason for keeping it illegal is that many law enforcement jobs are dependant on its illegality. Lawyers and judges make lots of money both prosecuting and defending marajuana cases. A large industry has grown up around feeding and housing the incarcerated. Since it is illegal, organized crime controls much of its distribution and thus has a vested interest in keeping it illegal. Combined, these powerful self-interest groups have managed to continue to restrict our personal freedom in this area. Smoking marajuana harms noone but the pot smoker, if it even does that .The concept " victimless crime " is an oxymoron. " You can't legislate morality. "

As an ex-police officer, and current attorney I can tell you that Marijuana is, but not always, a gateway drug. I dealt with alot of "crackheads" and others who were addicted to the "harder" drugs. I can tell you that ALL of them smoked Marijuana before advancing to other drugs. Now, that doesn't mean that EVERY person who ever smoked Marijuana went on to harder drugs.
As far as the Alcohol vs. Marijuana argument. I've seen just as many stoned people failing sobriety tests as I have drunks. Either way they can both kill when they drive.
I really have no opinion, either way, about legalization. I do wonder though how it would be regulated...should a doctor be trusted to properly prescribe it?

Yes it should for medical reasons. In the state where I live it is not leagal for medical reasons. My brother has had a brain tumor for 9 years and was told by his doc. to use it because of his weight loss. Any ways he got caught with it and was arrested and we could do nothing about it because it is illegal, even if the doc. says to use it. Kinda stupid if you ask me. It's the only thing that will help him to eat.

sure why not this is the way of freedom to choose, you either like it or you don't. Peter The Great was the first despot to ban apothecary's from selling drugs so corrupt officials good commit suicide rather then be impaled on pikes in the red square.

Yes it should, i think we should legalize m.j. then we can worry about cutting down on other worse drugs out there not every one who smokes it is a crack head. i agree there are too many crack heads in the u.s. but that is no reason for pot to be illegal i think if we legalized pot then we would onlly have to worry about the real drug addicts and maybe even cut out drinking. i beleive drinking is worse than smoking.

No, it's a drug. At the same rate though, alcohol should be illegal because it also makes you do some messed up things.

Sure, why not? It's legal in places like Holland. I bet if it was easier to get people would not abuse it as much.
