the key to instant messaging is that both people need to have the same platform. so both of you have to have Yahoo instant messenger, or you can't message each other.
it's free, (and it's also the best platform) so tell them to get it!

use www.gmail.com to instant message ur friend but u both got to have an email account at gmail.u need not download any messenger for this.

they need to both have the same messanger service otherwise you can use something like trillian which i do for aim, irc, and yahoo. If they dont have the im platform just give them a damn call
