We don't actually know. If the chicken came first, an egg was needed to hatch into that chicken in the first place. If the egg came first, a chicken would be needed to hatch an egg. There is no definite answer (yet anyway).

The egg definatly came before the chicken. What probably happened is that some form of bird thousands of years ago began mutating and evolving to live through the changing climates and it layed an egg, and a chicken hatched out of it. Just my guess...
