The more one studies, the more one is amazed and the more obvious it becomes that the complexity, diversity and completeness of things can not be explained by chance.

well for most of the people god may be not be existing but i think god is there...he is far more out of the reach of science but to prove it if you just start from the beginning, the big bang, we come to know lot's as scientists told us...like it was a great collision which lead to the universe but can you go even before that.....what was the cause of the big bang....if there were nothing at first from where did the atoms and molecules came and how they get enough energy which could last for billions or even longer period of time......if we still don't know from where and how we evolved and what our origin is, i don't think we can say that it is wrong to believe the existance of a supernatural power- the almighty god......you may say it would be found soon but if we don't know we can take into our consideration that god exists...and can believe that as the universe is so big, may be god gave everything a reason which humans call science.....so we are still not big enough to say there is no one even powerful than us....and once all believe this we would have the existence of god proved.

I think science can lead us to a very powerful understanding of God. In my astronomy classes in college, I often marveled at how perfect everything had to be in the universe just to sustain it. There has to be a perfect mix of elements in the sun, for example, to keep it going. There has to be a perfect balance in the physics that keep the solar system intact. How could all of this have been created by chance? It's ridiculous and egotistical to think we human beings are the beginning and end of civilized life. The sheer wonder at the enormity of the universe and how everything is kept in balance was enough to make me see that these things would be impossible without God.
I look for God in science around my own home, too. I see extraordinary beauty in sunsets, mountains, oceans, and even lizards on my back porch. There are scientific explanations for why everything appears the way it does, but WOW... God reveals himself to us through his magnificent artwork every day.
Science reaffirms God in so many ways - just look around. I don't think chaos could have become the world we have now without God.

Well said, Gatorz. Besides, faith and science deal with completely different things. Science can't deal with the metaphysical or supernatural to any great extent. For me, I keep my belief in God and my chemical research mostly separate for pragmatic reasons. I do acknowledge (and greatly respect) the fact that God set the principles of physics and chemistry and so on that control how science works, but I don't, for example, resort to "well, God must've done it somehow" if something happens in the lab that I cannot immediately explain.

I'm an atheist, so why would I want to reaffirm belief in something I don't think exists?

There are many things in science that can not be explained. The un-explainable is a result of God. Take a look at www.whatthebleep.com for a great discussion on how our minds work, the relationship between science and religion, etc.

1/2 believe in God and the other 1/2 don't. Pretty much like the general population. Doesn't have anything to do with intelligence.
