Some people have mentioned some good ones.
I'm'a lay the dope $#!T on you, though, its western material, not manga (mostly).
Transmetropolitan: Back on the Street
Promethea volume 1
Essential X-Men volume 2
Akira... all of it.
Preacher: Till The End of The World
Watchmen (I HIGHLY recommend this one)
The Dark Knight Returns
The Killing Joke
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
Appleseed... start at the beginning or you'll be lost.
Crying Freeman
Justice League: A New Beginning
Wanted (also highly recommended)

All of these are top-notch, and run the gamut from super-serious to hilarious. Also, most are available at Barnes n Nobles, etc, so you don't even have to brave the dank seediness of a comic book store. So, broaden your horizons a little and check out some of these. If you MUST have oriental fare, tho, DO read Akira if you haven't already... its a high water-mark for sure.

Some suggestions:
Kingdom Come (by DC - superheroes and politics)
Ronin (by DC - old school samurai in post apocalyptic world)
300 (by Dark Horse - Frank Miller's story of the battle of Thermopylae)
Road to Perdition (by Pocket - the basis for the movie)
Cerebus (by Aardvark-Vanheim - funny stuff)
Maus (by Pantheon - an interesting view of the Holocaust)
Starman (by DC - Art Deco stylish superhero book)

There is a book called "The 101 Best Graphic Novels" at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1561632848/103-7479018-7812659?v=glance&n=283155
I don't agree with everything on the list, but still most of them are great reads.

Lots of good ones already here, but I have to say three more -

"God Loves, Man Kills" X-Men
"Death of Captain Marvel"
"Avengers Disassembled" (technically, not a graphic novel, but reads like one in the collection)

Those still give me chills whenever I read them
