RENT is an operetta, which is a musical where they sing 95% of the dialogue. Chances are, your neice is young (12-23) and loves the messages from the movie. I have seen the show on broadway, and being a theatre fan myself, loved the stage show. However,m when the movie came out, I was very dissapointed and did not like it at all. If she is gung ho, check out the tour dates of the show and get her a ticket. As for this movie for you, I would steer clear a while. You may not enjoy it.

It's good, but I love musicals. I've heard it referred to as a Rock Opera, go into it thinking of it that way, it may help. It's not your typical musical like Music Man or Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, it's about real people with real issues. They do sing a lot, but there is a good amount of regular dialog which is a change from the Broadway production that is all singing and no spoken dialog. You should try and watch it, you might be surprised.

I guess to each's own, but myself I heard a lot about it, so i did rent it, and after the first five minutes I took the DVD out...looked like a musical to me, and found it too boring.
