The lack of a unified goal. Not meaning to strike up a huge topic on this, but if we were to be attacked or invaded by aliens, I think we would unite and come together to save the planet. That's what this world needs. A good invasion from outer space. LOL Or some other thing to unify the world to one goal. Religion devides us and was designed to do so. We are destined to a life of war, terror, and hate, not because of anything else except the lack of a unified goal.
If the world leaders would agree on a goal, and combine our technologies and resources to acheive that goal, then we would find peace in celebrating our findings. For instance. Our world goal should be, to build a "Star Trek" populate it with a few hundred people, and set out to explore the space.
How can we do this if we are too busy fighting over oil, religion, gold, or land? We really need proof that life exists on another planet. There is proof in the BIBLE. "A Pillar of Cloud by day and Pillar of Fire by night, led Moses and the Isrealites out of Egypt, parted the red sea, landed in the woods (Bush) and gave the 10 commandments, raised Jesus in the air when he was Babtised in the River Jordan. For all we know, Jesus could have had his healing powers from technology given by the aliens. And possibly was an alien himself.

It is my opinion that beliefs divide us and values unite us. Beliefs are generally unfounded and often relate to how we react to each other, but have no relationship to what really affects our lives.
An example would be the beliefs held by either conservative or liberals. When it comes to our daily lives as we live amongst both types we do not rely on either set of beliefs. However, as we do go about our daily lives we all value our families, our friendships, schools, jobs and the pocket book issues.
This not to say that all beliefs are unfounded and all values widely held. However, in general I have observed that this is the case. In those instances were this is not true no harm seems to be done.

You should read the work of Carl Jung.
Psychologically there are two ways to make a decision, either objectively or subjectively.
The outward extension of objective decision making is organizing and dividing work. It is logic imposed upon the outer world. It is necessarily cutting.
The inward extension of objective decision making is analysis of cause and effect.
The outward extension of subjective decision making is connecting others. It is subjectivity imposed upon the outer world. When that connection fails, it is rejection of the other.
The inward extension of subjective decision making is choosing. It is the only way you can decide anything. All acceptance or rejection occurs here.
We are divided not by categories, but by subjective rejections. The categories just support the logic to do so.

People become divided over opinions and beliefs. When a group of people or person believes that their way is superior, and become intolerant of others, they pave the way for division to occur.
When groups of people or persons refuse to accept that others may have a different way of operating, conflict arises and there must be a winner and a loser.
The feeling or need for superiority is permeated throughout divisions. It creates inequalities that proves to further drive a wedge amongst people.

I believe what divides us is a lack of interest in understanding convergaing or differing points of view; if it is true there are three major religions, what makes the others 'minor'? Tolerance is something that is not easily taught; rather, it is something that cannot be tuaght, only hoped for.

The quest to be better than those around you and beliefs that you are superior. Entitlement to a better life at the expense of others is common in many societies. Beliefs that you deserve what you have not worked for and punish those that have succeeded.

What divides us is the viewpoint of many cultures that differences are much more important among people than similarities. If similarity and connection were emphasized, division would fall away.
It's learned.
