Shelbyville and Springfield are town which are located in many different states which is why they use these names Thay can live anywhere! I prefer to think they live in New Jersey because in two epsisode they have gone to New York and arrived there quickly

Simpsons live in Springfield. I know there are lots of Springfields but Illinois also has a Shelbyville.
