Hmmm where did you get your statistics? Not saying you're wrong just wondering.
Anyway, just like anyone, there are extremists who hate, kill and or destroy property. I know it's not all Muslims, I've met and worked with many who are cool beyond belief. I would trust them with my life even though I do no believe what they believe.

I think prior to 9/11 Americans had a neutral to positive view of anyone who is religious, providing they did not belong to a cult. Most Americans do not care what religion another is, however there are of course individuals for whom that is not true. After 9/11, I think that changed. It wasn't so much 9/11 that changed it as the continued reaction of Muslims after 9/11. I would say now Americans view Muslims in a neutral to negative light now.

I think the division is philosophical between American ideals and Islamic ideals. The most radical Muslims see the split on the corrupt and hedonistic behaviors of Americans, Americans see the split along totalitarian and violent lines.

America is founded upon subordination of the state to the individual's free will. The Bill of Rights and subsequent court decisions place freedom above the state except in times of war. Americans often complain about criminals being released to protect their individual rights over the rights of the society. The abuse of individual rights outside of war invalidates the state. The Constitution itself provides a war exception in the suspension of the habeas corpus clause permitted to the Congress to protect the state. Lincoln, I believe, was the first to jail political opponents under this suspension of civil liberties. It is a set of ideals built around pure autonomy with cooperation and occaisional permission to use raw power by the state.

Islam is driven by submission to the will of Allah. Submission can, and appears to Americans, to be viewed as the destruction of individual autonomy and freedom including the freedom to sin. The state's role under Islam is to promote Islam which means to promote submission even if by the sword. It is a set of ideals built around the community which gives the community authorization for the use of raw power and cooperation within the community.

The potential nexus between the groups is of course in the cooperative ideals. I doubt Islam and America can be reconciled on the use of freedom to not submit versus a perceived mandate to submit.

Islam is growing quickly but so is Christianity. Small differences in rates of change can be upset pretty quickly by demographic shifts. Women always lead religious change either openly in public, but more often quietly. The Catholic Church in the United States is the fastest growing Church, and you will find that most converts are women or the husbands of women who previously converted.

I think the disputes between Islam and the United States will not end until the US finds an alternative to oil. When that happens, the principal Islamic states will be without a revenue stream and the people will be without a revenue stream to fund terrorism to the degree it is. Terrorism requires funding. That said, Muslims should be praying right now that India replaces America as the next superpower and not China. Atheistic China is more of a natural enemy to Islam than America. America believes in letting others be if they leave America be. No American will seek the destruction of the mosque. China will. India, although intermittently at war with Islamic Pakistan, has a better base of values for a global power and it must resolve its issues with its neighbor to transition to a global power.

Thank you for that little tid-bit. But to be honest with you most Americans don't care, if you look the same and talk similarly then most people just assume that you are of the same people. Just like with Latinos, Orientals, Asians and just about any other minority that look similar. And also since 9/11 people are just plain ****ed off. I know its not fair and I know that people are ignorant but the only thing we can do about that is improve education and that itself is an uphill battle.

Islam preaches the killing of non-believers. It preaches cutting off non-believers' heads and boiling them in hot water. It says women are inferior to men and that they should serve men. Islam is a crap relegion.
