In the UK at the moment there seems to be a big drive on increasing the number of schools run by religious organisations. If I was to set up a school that was run by a political party for example there would be uproar; imagine the 'Labour Party Comprehensive' or the 'Communist Party School for Girls'! Everyone would argue that we must not indoctinate school children, that they must be allowed to make up their own minds etc. Yet 'St Pauls Primary School' for example is absolutely fine?

Surely indoctrination of young children in the contentious and much debated religious beliefs of one part of the community is immoral? How can a child possibly make up their own mind in such a situation? I'm not saying shared valued aren't important - but these don't neccesarily come part and parcel with religion. Many of my Athiest friends are incredibly moral, whilst many religious people I know are very immoral individuals!

ALL education is indoctrination. Children are taught what is of value to the people paying the bills for the school... whether public policy through public schools, or parents paying a school who meets their religious beliefs.

That was a most interesting point and I have never really thought about the comparison between a religious school and a theoretical politically influenced school. You are correct in the fact that such a school would cause an uproar. Below is a link that you should find very disturbing, a Baptist site for children that teaches, among other things, that dinosaurs still walk the earth. My favorite part, however, is the instructions to never talk to atheists and if you happen to meet one run tell your parents immediatly. Just pure insanity being crammed into the minds of children.

Good point.
The fact is that no matter where you send your children for education, indoctrination happens. Public schools are not de-void of a political agenda any more or less than any private or religious school. I think the point is that if parents are trying to share values and impart their code of ethics to their children, they prefer to educate them in a setting that would be consistent with those values and morals.
Teaching children to think critically, question tradition and beliefs and remain open towards people who are different than they are can happen or not happen in any educational setting, but personally I think those things are picked up at home with the parents.

Do you suppose That the Public School System is then free of indoctrination?
The public school systems indoctrinate into Atheism which is (whether you want to believe it or not) a religion also. Every one has their own agenda. You choose which one fits your needs and what you perceive to be your children's needs. What your children do as they get older is up to them.

Why are public schools perceived to be acceptable and not seen as indoctrination. They indoctrinate politically correct view.
