They said it was too violent. Cartoon Network was going too put the show on their Adult Swim block, but Nick refused because they didn't want another channel too have more success with their show. Cartoon Network also wanted too make new episodes of it themselves.

OMG!!! i love invader zim. i heard that not enough pple watched the show (so sad!) so they took it off air. also i heard jhonen vasquez wouldnt make anymore if Nick. asked the show to come back cuz its been to long and the show would be too different! he obviously has moved on. so sad.

They cancelled it over four YEARS ago.
The creator, Jhonen Vasquez, said it was such a horrid experience he never wants to work on cartoons again.

Nick said that it was so much violence and they stopped it and now replaced with the X's and I think they possibly to make an DVD
