I'm totally freaked out about tornadoes. When someone on the news says there might be a tornado or something like that I freak out. What should I do to not be so scared!?!?!

If you are living in a tornado-prone area, then I suggest you protect your home: go down in your basement, and make it an emergency shelter. Put some non-perishable foods, water, flashlights, batteries and a couple of blankets in the basement. Remove any dangerous items from the basement. That way, you will be prepared if a tornado occurs. Also contact your local officials for more tips on how to survive a natural disaster. I'm sure they will help. Good luck!

OK....WHO has freaked you out about tornados? Someone in your family? Do you live in a tornado-prone area? If you do, and have a community alarm seek shelter (no cars!) and get low to the ground or in a room without windows (closet, bathroom).

Actually, there's not much you can do about a tornado. Now I'm speaking from personal experience. Don't make yourself have a mental breakdown about something you cannot control. You can control what you watch on TV and what "junk" goes into your brain. Concentrae on those things. All you do is make yourself neurotic. And if someone in your family is talking about tornados and starting to get upset, tell them the same thing. Turn off the TV!!

1. Realize that tornadoes are a fact of life and that you can't control them. Try to be at peace with that. Besides, the % of people who are harmed by tornadoes is much, much less than people who ARE.
2. Educate yourself about what to do in case of a tornado. Have a plan. If you EMPOWER YOURSELF with knowledge of the correct way to respond in case of an emergency, you just may save your own life or someone else's.
3. Don't dwell on it. If you constantly think about them, it will begin to control you. Realize the facts and base your opinion on logic, not emotions. I realize this is often easier for men than for women but you simply CAN'T let fear control you or IT WILL.
4. Lastly, consider moving somewhere where there aren't so many flippin tornadoes.

Why are you so scared, find that answer and you can get it rolling from there. I really can't say much else because I grew up in Oklahoma where there is a tornado like once a month in the summer, So I'm not so scared of them. Hope you figure it out.

You cannot control the weather so there is nothing you personally can do, except be prepared if you are in a tornado zone. Freaking out is the last thing you want to do. Stay calm, dear, you will live longer.

I hear you. With tornadoes, as with hurricanes, you need to be prepared/have a plan of action in case one strikes. If you cannot move from a danger area, then find out how to best protect yourself. Correct information is the first line of defense against natural disasters! Here are some links that will help you out:

I grew up in Tornado Alley. Just take reasonable precautions when a tornado warning is issued.

Be prepared for any kind of disaster and that should help to ease your fear. I myself love thunderstorms but when it gets up to tornado conditions I am scared to death in my basement. I would buy an all weather radio that alerts you to bad conditions and have things in the basement ready to go. When you are not home know your surroundings so if something does happen you will know what to do and feel less fearful.
