In my opinion there is no difference. There are some elements of fiction containing undeniable fact; whereas there are some elements of contrivance in what is called "nonfiction." For the novelist, the art of making the unbelieveable conceivable relies on his ability at verisimilitude or giving something the appearance of truth-- in other words, he is presenting his work AS IF it were a work of nonfiction. On the other hand, the biographer or the historian for instance, who commonly deal in the retelling of "truth," have formed definite opinions about their subjects. And we all have experienced the great discrepancy between fact and opinion at one time or another. Just look at the latest discussion of fiction and nonfiction by the author of A Million Little Pieces.
In short-- the differece between fiction and nonfiction is relative to the author and his or her value of the unvarnished truth and the presentation of it.

If you're talking about novel, the difference is.......
Fiction: All persons/characters, story line and locations are made up.
Non-fiction: Mostly truth with embellishments because no one knows the whole truth.
