Good question!
Many people believe that we yawns are the cause of to get rid of extra carbon dioxide and to take in more oxygen. Not entirely true (see ref 1 and 3). Sometimes we yawn as we shift phases from being awaken, to feeling sleepy, and anytime during our awakened state. And sometimes they simply are contagious(2).

"Giving people additional oxygen didn't decrease yawning and decreasing the amount of carbon dioxide in a subject's environment also didn't prevent yawning. "(3)

When people feel bored or tired, their breathing slows which leads to decreased level of oxygen in their lungs. As an involuntary action our brain prompts the body to yawn to get more air into the lungs. By opening the mouth wide and inhaling deeply, yawns draw in a large amount of oxygen while expelling the accumulated carbon dioxide from the blood stream.
If you closely watch when you sit in a couch after a good yawn you would wish to strecth the body and want to get up rather than curl around again in the couch.Watch out when you are tired and yawn for the next time.

Yawning is believed to accompany changes in metabolic activity as your body transitions between stages of alertness (e.g. when you're waking up or about to fall asleep). Yawning is probably only indirectly related to boredom. Contrary to popular belief, yawning has no association with a need to obtain more oxygen.

Boredom is an emotional state where you have nothing to do. The emotion of boredom is often interprated by the brain as being tired or sleepy. Yawning is a sign of being sleepy. So it seems completly natural to yawn if you are bored because if you are bored you are also tired.

.actually we yawn when the body lacks oxygen.......yawning helps us take in a large supply of air & helps bring the oxygen level to normal....its not always necessary that we yawn only when we r bored

We yawn due to lack of oxygen. When we are bored, we tend to slouch thus causing the body to not get enough oxygen.
