Because the way the earth is tilted on its axises during that part of the year

Due to the way that the earth tilts on its axis, when it is summer in the northern hemisphere it is winter in the southern hemisphere. During (usa) summer the sun is shining more on the top or the planet. During winter more on the bottom. When the sun is shining on the bottom of the planet the suns rays go completely over the end of the globe thus lighting up the entire end of the planet. Hope that's understandable.
