Either it should be legalized and treated as any other business by the government or the punishments for prostitution need to be much more severe. If it were to be legalized, taxed, and firm guidelines for health and management were in place, then at least those partaking may be at lower risk of diseases. If the punishments were more severe for both parties when caught in prostitution, such as prison time, castration, death penalty, etc....then I believe that less people would be willing to partake. Not only that, less money would be spent on officers which continually arrest and rearrest the same people, who are out in 24 hours to repeat their behaviors.

"Solve" means that prostitution for you is a problem. So first consider that in many cases it's a service done by professionals that don't have any issues with it, and hired by users who also think it's a legit service.

Well, that said, I don't make use of it, and most probably wouldn't date a prostitute either :p Although I think by far it is not a problem as hunger, decease or violence are problems.

Anyway, to "solve" prostitution, I see a few scenarios:

1) Our culture changes, so prostitution is no longer a problem

2) Advanced robots ... feel like real humans ... you get the picture.

3) Chemical substitute for sex ... who knows what the next pill will be able to do.

4) Genetics: we could at some point engineer our sexual instincts to work in a different manner.

well, enough fantasies for the morning, hope you enjoy the answers :)

ps.: forgot to mention that I'm only talking about prostitution where the parties involved are conscious adults, free-willing and not explored. Any other form of prostituion is definitely a problem and should be very heavily penaltied.

As you can see from the answers received so far, you first have to decide what should be done before deciding on a way of implementing that decision.

Some want to make prostitution illegal while others want to regulate it.

Based on our experiences with prohibition, which involved an Amendment to the Constitution, prohibiting prostitution would likely be futile and unworkable. Legalization and regulation, with strict health codes, seems to me to be the most sensible way to go.

We have successfully, I think, legalized and regulated alcohol and gambling. A similar tactic could be implemented with this other age-old problem.

Legalize it. No really I think it should be legal in government overlooked discreet brothels. The girls would be required to have drug tests and medical checks. The government could place a "luxury tax" on the industry and use those funds to pay for the inevitable bureaucracy and to pay for the law enforcement to keep other girls off the streets. We're not stopping prostitution now, just making sure it's seedy and unsafe. I've never had a prostitutes company, but I'm all for legalizing it for their welfare.

legalize and regulate prostitution. it's a problem now because we marginalize and criminalize it. once it's regulated and controlled, we can start addressing the root causes of why women go into prostitution, and we can start providing treatment and support options for prostitutes without them fearing prosecution when seeking help.
