Microsoft now checks for the legality and genuiness of your copy of windows. So when you try to update, it finds that you dont have a legal copy.
I bet your copy is a pirated one. If you have the windows CD, you'll find that it didn't come with a boxed package and documentation. No holograms. No printed matter. No serial numbers on any box.
What you need to do is get an ORIGINAL version of windows.

Five is correct in pointing you to the Microsoft website. Occasionally, legit copies of Windows do have issues with Windows Validation and the link will get you started on resolving those issues.
However, I'm concerned that you can't get security updates without validation. Although Misrosoft is restricting some feature downloads to verified genuine Windows copies, they are NOT restricting access to security fixes! Microsoft does realize that even pirated copies of Windows need to be kept up-to-date with security updates for the greater good.
Enable automatic updates on your computer. Even if you have a pirated copy of Windows, you WILL get all security patches that way.

Validation is Microsoft's way of checking if that software is legit - or is a copy.
I'm not sure if what you are saying is you were unable to go through the validation process, or you did and it could not validate that that copy is legit.
If it's not legit, you need to purchase the operating system in order to be legal and receive updates. Microsoft provides an online method to purchase it, which avoids having to reinstall.

I've run into some problems when validating a copy of windows that is infact legal. It sounds like you are indeed running into that problem yourself.
Visit http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/windows/default.mspx and make sure your copy of Windows is in fact legal.

if you got the pc with winxp already installed go back where you got it they gave you a illegal copy. if they gave you a winxp boot disc and a validation code key try reformatting it . if you changed more than 3 thing, memory,video/audio card , ethernet, modem etc.. winxp will think it is installed on a new pc and void you , if you contact microsoft they can reset it.
