I think Black History month came about because most people dont realize the contribututions Black Americans have made and it's a way to educate and inform. As far as I know, Jewish heritage month is in January for the same reasons.

October 6 is German-American Day and celebrates the founding of Germantown, PA by Daniel Pastorius on October 6 1685(?) I think I'm off with the year. October is also German-American month.
The AATF celebrates the first week of November as National French Week.

Jews have a ton of Holidays... Why is it we celebrate blacks for one month out of the year? That is not right. Everything else we learn about in school is about whites of all ethnicities. Latinos have "El Dia de los muertos", etc, the Irish have St Patty's Day and they celebrate everyday in bars (not to offend anyone), etc.
The one month we celebrate blacks is ridiculous. It should be every month. A black man invented penicillin among many other inventions, the first human was in fact black- the oldest human remains were found in Africa, blacks taught greeks and romans, etc. Why isn't all this taught in school and why only one month to learn about the great blacks of our society and their accomplishments?

It's a bit difficult. Most ethnic groups already have festivals that more or less establish if not celebrate their identity.
Maybe an ethnic group celebration day or something? Nice idea.

Because other ethnic groups know what is really important in life and are proud enough to already know their own history-They don't need a special month to promote it!!

They should have holidays for all ethnicities, but are their enough days in the year? You would have to make it on a schedule of a few years..... If you want this and are prepared, many of use will be behind you on it!

because black people are still suffering from prejudie people. irish people when they first came to America they werent accepted, but now they are for the most part. so i think that acceptance has played a good part in the apreciation month.
