it's not magic, and the objects or lack of objects dont disappear. There are many techniques magicians use to trick various aspects of human beings' sensory ability, but the best ones focus on tricking the mind itself.
Some of the trade secrets include misdirection, image retouching, distraction, deflection, assumption building, prediction anomalies and the famous 'smoke and mirrors' manouver.
A great magician once went on US national television and announced he was going to make an important national symbol disappear, so all the major TV networks got out their helicopters, and tens of thousands of people looked to the symbol to observe. A few minutes after the time the magician had stated he would make it disappear, it did, in front of the country's eyes. Even the best magicians in the business, including close personal friends and family of the magician, didn't know how it was done. The exact method used has never been revealed, but some of the techniques involved have been made public, and theories have emerged as to how it was done.
One of the most believable theories is that the magician has a rare gift (statistically a 1 in 200 billion chance) that he was born with the ability to ask material objects to stop vibrating. Scientifically, the little pieces that make up all matter are constantly moving, changing, vibrating, at the speed of light, within a large area of space around each little piece. If these little pieces stop moving, the space becomes apparent among a large number of small pieces (too small to see with the naked eye), and the object seems to disappear. voila!

They are on a movable stage. They keep the same background but move the stage out of the line of sight with the object to make it look like the object has disappeared.
The tricks the magicians do are illusions. They do something to attract the attention to one hand or area and perform the trick with the hand the out of sight or not being noticed.
Did you ever wonder how they make a person disappear from one area and appear in another? Ask and I'll tell you how this is done.

Went to the Segfried and Roy show is Vegas a few years ago. They were supposed to make an elephant disappear. We sat in the front row, and you could see a black screen come across the stage. Because of the lighting in the theater, it wouldn't have been humanly possible to see that screen from any sort of distance. And if I was paying more attention to them talking, rather than the surroundings, I wouldn't have noticed that either. As far as planes, trains, etc......now that's unexplainable!
